Course Entry Requirements

The formal entry requirements are:

  • GCSE grade C or above in English Language, Mathematics and Science. These three qualifications should have been awarded prior to application to this programme. Other GCSEs are required to show a good spread of curriculum subjects.  Equivalency examinations are accepted but NOT in Key Skills at Level 2.  Please see our note below on equivalency.
  • Minimum 2, preferably 3 A-levels of good grades.
  • 2.1 honours degree from a UK University or a recognised equivalent qualification (in exceptional cases 2.2 degrees will be considered if supported by evidence of other strong academic and personal qualities).
  • Minimum of two weeks classroom experience in a state funded primary school.
  • The contents of the applicant’s previous education must provide the necessary foundation for working as a primary teacher. They must demonstrate an ability to communicate clearly and grammatically in spoken and written Standard English.

Applicants With Non-British Qualifications

If you hold a degree or other qualification from a non-UK institution, you must verify their equivalence through the National Recognition Information Centre for the UK (UK NARIC) prior to application. Telephone: 01242 260 010.

Applicants Who Do Not Hold Maths, English, Science GCSE Grade C

If you do not hold a GCSE in Mathematics, English or Science at Grade C or above or an equivalent qualification, you will need to apply to take an equivalency test prior to application.

We do run equivalency testing for Science GCSE.

We DO NOT ACCEPT “key skills” or “access” qualifications as equivalent to GCSE’s

We accept equivalency from many organisations, but suggest your first enquiry should be to your local FE college.  If in doubt, please contact the office.

PLEASE CHECK THAT YOU ARE TAKING LEVEL 4 OR EQUIVALENT TO GCSE GRADE C IN A NAMED SUBJECT BEFORE EMBARKING ON THE TRAINING OR PAYING.

A pass in named subject equivalency tests will be acknowledged by Yorkshire SCITT as being equivalent to Grade C or above at GCSE/GCE O-level.
